IT IS POSSIBLE A PRESIDENTIAL REELECTION IN EL SALVADOR?

This is a very interesting question to answer in fact. Come with me and let me show you my point of view about this important and controversial topic.

Firstable, it is essential to start saying that regarding to El Salvador’s constitution that was created in 1983 the presidential reelection is forbidden not in one otherwise in five articles of our constitution. Nevertheless, thanks to a reinterpretation of the constitution made by Supreme Court was opened the possibility to presidential reelection.

Second, it is important to mention that this opportunity to opt to presidential reelection is blamed of the traditional political parties in El Salvador (ARENA/ FMLN) given that thanks to their bad job during 30 years, they provided to the current president (Nayib Bukele) the opportunity to show to Salvadorans that only supporting him with many deputies he could transform the country. As a result, the majority of Salvadorans believed in his words and decided to support him on the elections that took place on February 28th.

Third, as the result of the elections were favor to president Bukele he ordered to his deputies to destitute to the five judges of the Supreme Court (Sala Constitutional) and nominate 5 judges that easily obey his orders. And exactly was like that, given that on September the 3rd the Court gave a resolution in which they said that current president Bukele could participate as a candidate to look for his reelection in 2024.

Fourth, talking honestly I think that president Bukele will win his reelection in 2024 since the majority of Salvadorans are going to vote for him even knowing that his reelection is illegal. However, I consider that his reelection is a bad idea due to it is a clear violation to the constitution and knowing the way how he acts it is possible that he decides to maintain in the power forever. Finally, I have to confess that I voted for the current president in 2019; moreover, I made the same voting for his political party in 2021. Notwithstanding, in 2024 I will reflect totally my vote given that I don’t want that my country finishes as Nicaragua or Venezuela.
